Ideology Double Journal
Quote #1: When it was initially conceived in 2011, the YD Program was often characterized as an alternative pathway for undergraduates unable to complete teacher education programs at the college due to high standardized testing cut off scores.
This quote to me is offensive because not all of us that are doing the YD Program tried to get into the teacher education program. Also, some of the people in the YD Program do not want to be teachers they just want to work with the youth.
Quote #3: We start by helping students map different camps of youth development ideologies and give them opportunities to observe, practice, and directly engage with these ideologies across varied contexts. This is why I love the YD Program. They don’t just tell you want you need to do with the youth to them its not a right or wrong answer. They explain everything to you and why you should do certain things. The also show you different things you can do with the youth and what the out came can be from doing that. I was in the education program before YD and I did not like it because there was only one way of doing something and that it. In YD you can give your opinion and you can talk about things to see if it will work or not. YD is more like a family then a classroom and it makes it easier to ask question and give your thoughts without thinking that someone is going to judge you.
Quote #2: While we did and still do welcome students who are exiting traditional preservice teacher programs (as well as other majors) we learned quickly that YD is not merely a retention program. We attract many undergraduates with strong academic records who want to work with youth outside of school structures.
I love the YD Program. It is everything that I wanted. I have made a lot of friends that where all in different majors that did not feel like that major fit them prefect until the YD Program. I think that being in other majors before this one helps you understand and appreciate everything that all of the teacher does for you. Going from a major that you don’t like weather you were passing or failing that major into YD is a big change.
