Quote #1: When it was initially conceived in 2011, the YD Program was often characterized as an alternative pathway for undergraduates unable to complete teacher education programs at the college due to high standardized testing cut off scores. This quote to me is offensive because not all of us that are doing the YD Program tried to get into the teacher education program. Also, some of the people in the YD Program do not want to be teachers they just want to work with the youth.  Quote #2 : While we did and still do welcome students who are exiting traditional preservice teacher programs (as well as other majors) we learned quickly that YD is not merely a retention program. We attract many undergraduates with strong academic records who want to work with youth outside of school structures. I love the YD Program. It is everything that I wanted.
